Keep Hutto Beautiful Foundation invites you to share in celebrating our newly created Monarch Waystation. This is the first of many demonstration gardens that will be built at the Peterson Community Garden.
A Monarch Waystation is an intentionally-managed garden that provides food and habitat for the struggling Monarch butterfly population. As a rule, a waystation must include at least 2 types of Milkweed, the 'host' plant for Monarchs. Without milkweeds throughout their spring and summer breeding areas in North America, monarchs would not be able to produce the successive generations that culminate in the migration each fall. Similarly, without nectar from flowers these fall migratory monarch butterflies would be unable to make their long journey to overwintering grounds in Mexico. The need for host plants for larvae and energy sources for adults applies to all monarch and butterfly populations around the world.
The Monarch Waystation is made possible thanks to a Native Garden Grant from AEP Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful. Special thanks to Lowe's Home Improvement for their generous donation of time and materials. Thank you also to Wright's Nursery for such a wonderful selection of milkweed and nectar plants available for purchase.
