Looking to find a bit more meaning to volunteering than cleaning up green spaces? Enjoy working with people, caring for humanity and wanting to benefit someone with a terminal diagnosis who is lonely just needs someone to provide companionship?
Death is guaranteed, one of the few things we can count on in life. But friends, family community is not. Many patients in hospice are facing a terminal diagnosis alone, which can be overwhelming, depressing and lonely.
Are you are looking to support others through a difficult time, maybe your drawn to advocate and hold space for someone who is transitioning, or you are just interested in working with patients who are moving through the final stages of life and need someone to hold their hand.
There is no greater gift than the gift of presence. However, many hospice patients have outlived their family and friends or have very little support during their final days. All it takes is an hour or so to make a huge difference in a patient's outlook and quality of life.
Some hospice volunteer activities include:
- Playing games
- Reading books
- Sharing stories
- Painting nails
- Bringing your pet
- Playing guitar, piano, etc.
- Providing bereavement support
- Assisting with office needs (filing, envelope stuffing, folder making, event planning, phone calls, etc.)
No previous hospice experience required. Training is provided! Volunteers provide NO medical care, just friendship.
