AGE of Central Texas Hosting Free “Caring for the Caregiver” African American Caregiver Conference in Pflugerville on October 14th
AGE of Central Texas will host the first annual “Caring for the Caregiver” African American Caregiver Conference on Saturday, October 14th. Designed to help unpaid family members effectively care for an older adult, the free conference sessions will be presented from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1202 Russell Street in Pflugerville.
The conference is a joint effort between regional nonprofit organization AGE of Central Texas and St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church to assist first-time caregivers to better manage the dynamics of their new caregiving role.
The “Caregiver Training Camp” will launch at 8:30 a.m. with Registration and a curated Information & Resource Fair. Free COVID and flu vaccines will also be available, courtesy of Vax Together Austin.
At 9:00 a.m., the AGE of Central Texas CaregiverU education program will present “I’m a Caregiver, Now What?!”, discussing useful information about what to do early on in the caregiving journey, the importance of self-care, and different options available for respite care.
In the second session at 10:00 a.m. will discuss “The Caregiver Playbook,” with the AGE of Central Texas Resources & Information Center discussing how to find and access area resources, creating a community of support, and answering attendees’ specific caregiving questions.
The third and final session at 11:00 a.m. will feature a panel of family caregivers in a round-table conversation sharing their wisdom, experiences, and advice.
