Volunteer: Garden Volunteer Opportunities

Garden Volunteer Opportunities at Round Rock Area Serving Center:

The Serving Center is looking for volunteers that either know how to grow fruits and vegetables, or would like to learn under our Williamson County Master Gardeners.  Volunteers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 9-11 (weather permitting), and the 1st Saturday of every month (except April), also from 9-11.  You can come as often as you like and you don't need to stay the whole 2 hours either.  If you just want to come for an hour and harvest, that's great.

Our gardens provide about 5000 pounds of fresh, organic produce to the food pantry every year and we teach and assist 5 client families to manage their own beds at the garden.  We have 47 raised vegetable beds and a small orchard with blackberries, grapes, figs, pears, pomegranates, mulberries and this year we are installing a raspberry bed.

No experience required, but it does help to enjoy being outside.  Here's what you can learn or teach:  soil preparation, planting seeds and transplants, pest control, fertilizing, harvesting, weed control, composting and greenhouse management.

If you can spare a few hours to help us feed our clients, please contact Teresa at twilts@ewilts.org or 763-227-5957.

Volunteer: Hospice Companionship Volunteer

Have you heard the story about the 90 year old woman from Austin who left a pleading note for her neighbor? It was heart wrenching to me. Her note said:

"...Would you consider becoming my friend? I am 90 years old - live alone and all my friends have passed away. I am so lonesome and could just use someone to talk to."

There is no greater gift than the gift of presence. However, many hospice patients have outlived their family and friends or have very little support during their final days. All it takes is an hour or so to make a huge difference in a patient's outlook and quality of life.

Some hospice volunteer activities include:

Playing games Reading books Sharing stories Painting nails Bringing your pet Playing guitar, piano, etc. Providing bereavement support Assisting with office needs (filing, envelope stuffing, folder making, phone calls, etc.)

No previous hospice experience required. Training is provided! Volunteers provide NO medical care, just friendship.

If you have any questions, please email Morgan at mskarin@magnoliahospice.com

Thank you for having the heart to serve others!

Volunteer: Become A Big Mentor

As a Big Brother or Sister, you’ll not only make a positive impact on the life of a child, you’ll enrich your own life and have fun as well. When you spend time with your Little, you share your own interests and discover new ones. You see life through the eyes of a child again. You laugh and play with a new friend, all while children grow and thrive in ways that change their lives.

Children thrive with a mentor in their life. Research shows that youth in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program have more confidence, earn better grades and demonstrate better social skills than their peers. They are also less likely to use drugs or alcohol, skip school, become parents at an early age or exhibit violent behavior.

To be a Big, you must be 18 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, access to reliable transportation and be willing to commit to a minimum one year volunteer experience. We currently have a special need for Bigs who are male, bilingual and/or of color.

Learn about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister at one of our Online Volunteer Information Sessions!

Each 30-minute session includes information about how our one-to-one mentoring program works, the impact that mentors make, and how to get started. Time will also be reserved for Q & A.

Volunteer: Be a Holiday Hero...Volunteer Drivers for the Elderly Needed

What does it mean to be a volunteer with Senior Access? It means changing someone's life. It means making a difference in ways that impact health and emotional well-being. It means befriending the lonely and the often overlooked segment of our society. And it may even impact you!

What would you do if you could no longer drive? Our clients do not drive and rely on others to be able to leave their homes and go to appointments, get groceries, and other errands.

Volunteer drivers help individuals 60 and older to remain independent and age in their own homes. Be a volunteer driver and help your senior neighbors get to doctor appointments, grocery stores, libraries, beauty salons, etc. Volunteers also needed to complete handyman tasks, and help with light yard work. Providing transportation also helps relieve loneliness and isolation. Be a driver and a friend!

Schedule around your time using our web-based platform. Family-friendly...bring your children or grandchildren, and is flexible to work with your schedule. Volunteers determine where and how far they want to drive.

Our clients live in Round Rock, Hutto, Pflugerville, East Austin, and Manor, but you can choose where to drive.

Complete our application and then you will hear from staff for the next steps.

Volunteer and change a life. The life you change just might be yours.

Volunteer: Love Box Leaders

You can apply to volunteer at this link.

The Love Box program provides fostering families (caregivers, children in foster care, and biological/adopted children) with community and holistic support. This wrap-around support enables caregivers to continue to do the important and meaningful work of being foster parents. As a Love Box group, you will be matched with a local foster family based on location, compatibility, and scope of needs. When our families are matched with committed volunteers who show up monthly, parents feel supported and children gain a greater sense of normalcy, relational permanency, and self confidence.

Volunteers seek to build relationships with their family by spending quality time with the whole family: playing games, sharing a meal, and being intentional. They can also create and deliver personal care packages based on current practical needs. We tell our volunteers to think of themselves as the fun “auntie” and “uncle” who visits once a month to bring love, encouragement, and hope. This program requires a one year commitment, but the connections and impact last a lifetime.

Volunteer: Dare to Dream Mentor

You can apply to volunteer at this link.

The heart of the Dare to Dream program is to walk alongside youth as they navigate through life's challenges. The youth in our Dare to Dream program need the wisdom, advice, encouragement, and community that mentors can provide. Mentors meet practical and emotional needs as well as provide guidance through developmental milestones. The goal is for youth to be engaged and to feel supported and equipped to navigate life. A mentor commits to meeting with the youth every other week to set goals and help them achieve their dreams. These relationships will hopefully last a lifetime, but the program is a year commitment. Mentors matched with a high school student are strongly encouraged to stay with the youth until high school graduation.

We tell mentors that the simple act of telling their youth “I believe in you,” “You are special,” and “You are going to do great things” can change their path completely.

Volunteer: Hospice Volunteer Needed!

Want to Make A Difference?

Valerian Home Health and Hospice has volunteer opportunities for those wanting to make a difference in the lives of those who are in the greatest need of compassion.

Brighten a patient's day by spending time reading, listening to music, talking or watching television. Sometimes even just a quiet presence can make all the difference. Administrative opportunities are also available for those who wish to volunteer their time providing assistance to our office staff.

Hospice is a philosophy of Heath Care for those who are actively dying; but Hospice is not “giving up” on someone.  It’s about elevating their quality of life.

Many who volunteer in Hospice find the work to be uplifting, rewarding, and they usually gain a much brighter understanding in their life.

If you would like to learn more, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Rachal Gobert via call or text: 512-994-7122 or email: social@valerianhhh.com

Volunteer: Drivers Responsibility Program - Assistance Applying for Waiver

LifeSteps provides court-mandated classes for DWI and DUI offenders.  Most of these offenders have had their license suspended and must pay fines and fees/surcharges through the State's Driver's Responsibility Program. Many of these clients could qualify as indigent and have their surcharges waived. Others could apply for an Occupational Driver's License.  The application process for a waiver or a ODL is complicated. Some technical assistance would be beneficial.  The volunteers assisting would meet with the client (here at LifeSteps).  The meeting would be to:

Verify indigence and guide the client through the paperwork to qualify for a waiver of surcharges from the DPS, or  To assist those who do not qualify as indigent to fill out the paperwork for an Occupational Driver’s License.

Volunteer: Music Mentors

Kids In A New Groove (KING) provides private, in-home, music instruction to Central Texas youth in foster care, allowing them to gain the benefits of one-on-one mentorship, as well as the skills and creativity that come with music. KING’s program combines the power of mentoring with music instruction.

The program is successful because of the dedicated music mentors who give their time and share their passion for music with our youth. As one music mentor said: “She credits music with helping to give her the confidence to be herself, to express herself, and to find herself. I credit her with reminding me how powerful it is to share music with others”

We are always seeking new volunteers to make a lasting impact on a child’s life and pass along their artistic skills in the most meaningful way. Please visit our website to learn more: www.kidsinanewgroove.org.
