Volunteer: Horse Leads and Side Walkers for Adaptive Riding Lessons

Equine Leader/Horse Handler

The primary responsibility of the equine leader/horse handler is to manage the equine before, during and after the lesson and ensure participant safety during grooming, tacking and while leading. If there is no side walker required for the participant, the equine leader may need to reinforce directions from the instructor and keep “an eye” not only on the horse but also on the participant.

Requirements - Equine experience including an understanding of equine behavior, haltering, leading, grooming and tacking. Experience working with people with disabilities is encouraged. Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces for up to an hour and jog for short distances. Must be X years or older. Ability to volunteer in one, hour-long lesson per week per session.

Responsibilities

·      May bring equine in from the paddock or retrieve equine from its stall.

·      Assist participant with grooming and tacking the horse. Other team members may help with this process too but in general one individual should work directly with the participant for clarity of instruction.

·      May assist participant in leading the equine in the arena prior to mounting.

·      Allow the participant to be as independent as possible. Always ready to assist by supporting the horse through reinforcement of a participant’s cue to the horse if the participant shows an attempt to perform the instructor’s direction or is unable to direct the horse effectively.

·      Hold the lead rope with enough length of line to allow for the natural motion of the horse's head while still maintaining control. Walk between the equine’s head and shoulder, not dragging from in front, or pulling from behind. Be aware of and responsible for how your body language and energy are affecting the equine.

·      Be present and engaged in the lesson to be aware of what is happening now and next.

·      Give other equines and volunteers lots of space when passing. Keep one horse-length distance from the horse in front of you. Allow plenty of room for the side walker to walk safely with no impediment (rail, cone, tree, etc.) while in the arena or out on the trail.

·      In case of emergency, manage the equine in a manner that keeps everyone safe and calm which may include removing the equine from the arena once the rider is dismounted.

·      Assist with untacking, brushing down the horse and putting tack away with other team members.

·      Return the equine to their stall or paddock (with another volunteer) as directed by the instructor.

Sidewalker

The primary responsibility of the sidewalker during a lesson is to ensure the safety and well-being of the participant.

Requirements - Experience working with equines and/or people with disabilities is helpful but not necessary. Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces, often times with at least one arm raised at or above shoulder height supporting moderate weight for 10–15-minute intervals and jog for short distances. Must be X years or older. Ability to volunteer in one, hour-long lesson per week per session. A history of shoulder injury is a precaution to sidewalking.

Responsibilities

·      May assist the horse handler with bringing the horse in from the paddock or stall.

·      May assist the horse handler and/or participant with grooming and tacking.

·      May assist the instructor with setting up the arena in preparation for the lesson.

·      Assist instructor with mounting and dismounting the participant as directed.

·      Stay beside the participant and equine throughout the entire lesson and be aware of the participant at all times. Never leave a participant unattended unless directed by instructor.

·      Notify the instructor immediately if you have any safety concerns or need participant behavior modification/redirection assistance.

·      May provide physical or cognitive support to the participant and interact with the participant during all aspects of the lesson as directed by the instructor.

·      Allow participant time to process and respond to directions given by the instructor.

o   Reinforce instructor’s directions as needed after processing time.

·      Communicate with horse handler to convey participant’s responses to the horse’s pace/movement and instructor’s directions for where the team should go.

·      Offer positive, specific, reinforcing feedback to the participant.

·      Limit and redirect distracting and unnecessary conversations to encourage participant focus and lesson success.

By simply showing up, you’ll:

Offer support and encouragement through life’s challenges Introduce your Little to new experiences and opportunities Help them develop confidence, skills, and goals Be a consistent, caring presence in their life

Volunteer: Bike Mechanics Needed! No experience necessary.

Interested in volunteering with us? We have a workshop every Tuesday to work on bikes. No prior bike mechanic skills necessary! We have several volunteers who pick up donations, assist clients in selecting a bike, refurbish bikes and manage the organization. We use some of our donations to purchase lunch for these hard working volunteers during our mid-afternoon break. We need help fixing bikes, cleaning up bikes, managing social media, pick-up, delivery, fundraising, marketing and corporate support. Come help us. The feeling of making someone’s life nicer is very rewarding. You will be richly rewarded by seeing the smiles we create.

Please contact us at 512.931.1756 or through the Georgetown Free Bikes Facebook page if you’re ready to volunteer. Or; come by our shop at 2055 FM 1460, Georgetown on Tuesday between 11 am and 8 pm to see for yourself

Outside of our regular hours, if you have something to donate, you can leave it in or near the bike rack near the entrance door.

Georgetown Free Bikes operates through a dedicated group of people and organizations with a passion for the mission of ensuring everyone who wants a bike has access to one. With that in mind, our volunteers are what makes the organization move forward. Georgetown Free Bikes is managed by a volunteer board.

Our passionate team of volunteers collect and receive bicycle donations from the local area. Volunteers process bicycles by helping people choose the right bike size. Mechanics then take those bicycles, evaluate them and begin the task of refurbishing them to a functional bicycle to live a new life with a new owner. We have all the tools and parts necessary to refurbish these bicycles. All we need is enthusiastic people interested in helping the community. No experience is necessary, we will teach you how to fix up bikes. The satisfaction of taking a bike that has some issues and making it functional again is rewarding in itself but when you experience the joy we create, that is the cherry on top.

Looking for a volunteer opportunity for your youth group or other community organization? Please get in touch with us — we’d love to partner with you to repair and distribute bikes.

A few hours of your time on Tuesdays of each week makes a huge difference in our ability to deliver bicycles to our residents.

Volunteer: Love Box Leaders in Williamson County

We are in need of volunteers for our Love Box program in Round Rock. This program is a one-year, year, once-a-month commitment. Our Love Box® program provides community and holistic support to fostering families, including caregivers, children experiencing foster care, and biological/adopted children. This wrap-around support empowers caregivers to continue to do the important and meaningful work of being foster parents. Each Love Box® volunteer/group will be matched with a local foster family based on location and compatibility. When our families are matched with committed volunteers who show up monthly, parents feel supported, and children gain a greater sense of normalcy, relational permanency, and self-confidence. This support also leads to increased placement stability, reducing the high rate of turnover that often occurs in the foster care system.

Volunteer: Hospice Companion Volunteers Needed - Georgetown

St. David’s Hospice & Family Care is actively seeking caring and compassionate volunteers to visit and offer companionship to hospice patients in the Georgetown area. Hospice patients are in the final stages of their lives, and regular visits from volunteers provide support and comfort. Having someone to talk to, sharing stories or even providing a quiet presence is incredibly valuable and makes a meaningful difference in their lives. Volunteers can also offer respite and downtime for the primary caregiver and other family members.

Activities hospice volunteers can do with patients include: talking, reading aloud, listening to music, watching TV/movies, writing letters, sharing stories, reminiscing about times in their lives, looking at photos, sewing/knitting, playing cards or board games, working puzzles, sharing time, etc. Volunteers are encouraged to share any special skills or talents with patients.

We are looking for volunteers who can make a commitment to volunteer 1-2 hours per week. Volunteer shifts are flexible and tailored to the volunteer’s schedule and availability. We match volunteers with patients that are located close to their home. This opportunity is not a clinical role; therefore, volunteers do not need medical experience. They do not provide any medical care nor do they offer social or spiritual advice. Many of our patients speak Spanish, and Spanish speaking volunteers are needed.

Volunteering an hour or more a week can make a lasting impact on the life of a hospice patient. We hope you will consider becoming a hospice volunteer and joining the St. David’s Hospice team.

For questions, more information or to obtain an application: Contact René Carlin at Roberto.Carlin@HCAHealthcare.com.

Volunteer: Garden Volunteer Opportunities

Garden Volunteer Opportunities at Round Rock Area Serving Center:

The Serving Center is looking for volunteers that either know how to grow fruits and vegetables, or would like to learn under our Williamson County Master Gardeners.  Volunteers meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 9-11 (weather permitting), and the 1st Saturday of every month (except April), also from 9-11.  You can come as often as you like and you don't need to stay the whole 2 hours either.  If you just want to come for an hour and harvest, that's great.

Our gardens provide about 5000 pounds of fresh, organic produce to the food pantry every year and we teach and assist 5 client families to manage their own beds at the garden.  We have 47 raised vegetable beds and a small orchard with blackberries, grapes, figs, pears, pomegranates, mulberries and this year we are installing a raspberry bed.

No experience required, but it does help to enjoy being outside.  Here's what you can learn or teach:  soil preparation, planting seeds and transplants, pest control, fertilizing, harvesting, weed control, composting and greenhouse management.

If you can spare a few hours to help us feed our clients, please contact Teresa at twilts@ewilts.org or 763-227-5957.

Volunteer: Hospice Companionship volunteer

Looking to find a bit more meaning to volunteering than cleaning up green spaces?  Enjoy working with people, caring for humanity and wanting to benefit someone with a terminal diagnosis who is lonely just needs someone to provide companionship?

Death is guaranteed, one of the few things we can count on in life. But friends, family community is not.   Many patients in hospice are facing a terminal diagnosis alone, which can be overwhelming, depressing and lonely.

Are you are looking to support others through a difficult time, maybe your drawn to advocate and hold space for someone who is transitioning, or you are just interested in working with patients who are moving through the final stages of life and need someone to hold their hand.

There is no greater gift than the gift of presence. However, many hospice patients have outlived their family and friends or have very little support during their final days. All it takes is an hour or so to make a huge difference in a patient's outlook and quality of life.

Some hospice volunteer activities include:

Playing games Reading books Sharing stories Painting nails Bringing your pet Playing guitar, piano, etc. Providing bereavement support Assisting with office needs (filing, envelope stuffing, folder making, event planning, phone calls, etc.)

No previous hospice experience required. Training is provided! Volunteers provide NO medical care, just friendship.

If you have any questions, please email Merrianne @ mhughes@magnoliahospice.com

Volunteer: Become A Big Mentor

As a Big Brother or Sister, you’ll not only make a positive impact on the life of a child, you’ll enrich your own life and have fun as well. When you spend time with your Little, you share your own interests and discover new ones. You see life through the eyes of a child again. You laugh and play with a new friend, all while children grow and thrive in ways that change their lives.

Children thrive with a mentor in their life. Research shows that youth in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program have more confidence, earn better grades and demonstrate better social skills than their peers. They are also less likely to use drugs or alcohol, skip school, become parents at an early age or exhibit violent behavior.

To be a Big, you must be 18 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, access to reliable transportation and be willing to commit to a minimum one year volunteer experience. We currently have a special need for Bigs who are male, bilingual and/or of color.

Learn about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister at one of our Online Volunteer Information Sessions!

Each 30-minute session includes information about how our one-to-one mentoring program works, the impact that mentors make, and how to get started. Time will also be reserved for Q & A.

Volunteer: Dare to Dream Mentor

You can apply to volunteer at this link.

The heart of the Dare to Dream program is to walk alongside youth as they navigate through life's challenges. The youth in our Dare to Dream program need the wisdom, advice, encouragement, and community that mentors can provide. Mentors meet practical and emotional needs as well as provide guidance through developmental milestones. The goal is for youth to be engaged and to feel supported and equipped to navigate life. A mentor commits to meeting with the youth every other week to set goals and help them achieve their dreams. These relationships will hopefully last a lifetime, but the program is a year commitment. Mentors matched with a high school student are strongly encouraged to stay with the youth until high school graduation.

We tell mentors that the simple act of telling their youth “I believe in you,” “You are special,” and “You are going to do great things” can change their path completely.

Volunteer: Love Box Leaders

You can apply to volunteer at this link.

The Love Box program provides fostering families (caregivers, children in foster care, and biological/adopted children) with community and holistic support. This wrap-around support enables caregivers to continue to do the important and meaningful work of being foster parents. As a Love Box group, you will be matched with a local foster family based on location, compatibility, and scope of needs. When our families are matched with committed volunteers who show up monthly, parents feel supported and children gain a greater sense of normalcy, relational permanency, and self confidence.

Volunteers seek to build relationships with their family by spending quality time with the whole family: playing games, sharing a meal, and being intentional. They can also create and deliver personal care packages based on current practical needs. We tell our volunteers to think of themselves as the fun “auntie” and “uncle” who visits once a month to bring love, encouragement, and hope. This program requires a one year commitment, but the connections and impact last a lifetime.

Volunteer: Music Mentors

Kids In A New Groove (KING) provides private, in-home, music instruction to Central Texas youth in foster care, allowing them to gain the benefits of one-on-one mentorship, as well as the skills and creativity that come with music. KING’s program combines the power of mentoring with music instruction.

The program is successful because of the dedicated music mentors who give their time and share their passion for music with our youth. As one music mentor said: “She credits music with helping to give her the confidence to be herself, to express herself, and to find herself. I credit her with reminding me how powerful it is to share music with others”

We are always seeking new volunteers to make a lasting impact on a child’s life and pass along their artistic skills in the most meaningful way. Please visit our website to learn more: www.kidsinanewgroove.org.

Volunteer: Hospice Volunteer

We are searching for compassionate volunteers to visit our Hospice patients in their homes.  Our Hospice patients suffer from life limiting illnesses and are in the last stages of their lives.  Volunteers are an extremely important part of what we do at Guiding Hospice.

A volunteer can make a significant impact on the remaining days of a person's life.  Baking cookies, singing songs, reciting scripture, reading books, taking for walks, flipping through photo albums, are all things we encourage our volunteers to participate in and all things that make an enormous difference in our patients lives.

We are looking for a small commitment of 2-3 hours per week.  As a Hospice provider, we would be honored for any volunteer to join our compassionate team.  We look forward to meeting you.

Volunteer: Walking With Wags

If you would enjoy making a difference in the lives of homeless animals, then we are the place for you! You will get plenty of exercise, have the pleasure of meeting other animal lovers, and have fun caring for dogs and cats that will shower you with love and attention because they appreciate the time, love, and energy you give them.

We are looking for dog walkers for AM and PM shifts, seven days a week. Some volunteers come in once or twice a week; others come in once or twice a month. The amount of time you give to our shelter family is entirely up to you.

What's involved: Our dogs are walked three times a day starting at 7am, 11am and 5pm. We have a secluded trail through a wooded area that leads to a dead-end gravel road. You will get to spend one-on-one time with each dog that will help them learn proper leash manners, give them some socialization opportunities to meet new people, and can maybe even teach them a few tricks to help them get adopted quicker!

All dogwalkers must be at least 18 years old. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Many other volunteer opportunities are available, including fund-raising, public relations, assisting at adoption events, and fostering. For more information on volunteering, please visit our website at www.lifelongfriends.org , or call 512-267-6876.
