Did you know that April is National Volunteer Month?

Not many people do! But we should – it’s important to take the time to recognize and thank the individuals and groups that give their time in the service of others. They help address pressing needs and make our communities better places. Many of our nonprofit organizations would not be able to provide their services without the commitment of generous volunteers.

Although I have been with The Volunteer Center for less than a year, I have certainly learned a great deal, and am humbled every day by the people I meet and talk to – they are passionate and energetic about giving back. At the Serving Center (my parent organization), on a daily basis I see volunteers who have served here for over 20 years! I have met youth who began volunteering before they could spell ‘volunteer’!

One of the things that I’ve been exited to learn about is the many different reasons why people volunteer and the different ways they get involved. There are volunteers who work on-site, off site, and online. I have met people who volunteer with an agency because that agency was there to help them in a time of need. Or they start volunteering at an event with a friend and quickly become a champion of the cause. Or their lives have been touched by an issue the nonprofit agency addresses and they take on the agency’s mission as their own.

In honor of National Volunteer Month we want to hear from YOU – email us and tell us about why you volunteer and what volunteering means to you. We’ll be featuring your stories here on our blog. volrock@volrock.org

A deep and sincere thank you to all of you who give your time, talents and resources to make our community great. We appreciate you!
